FIBONACCI SPIRAL ROOF
sketch for the Eden Project by Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners

date: 2003
(collaboration with Jason Ahmed and Chris Williams, using Bentley GenerativeComponents software developed by Robert Aish)

The parametric software allows changes to be made to the geometry without rebuilding the model.

This collaborative design exercise, sponsored by Bentley and using an early version of their GenerativeComponents software, used parametric modelling to create a roof based on the geometry of the Fibbonacci sequence. A simple mathematical formula was used to generate the surface shape, onto which modular panels were placed that could fold to accommodate the changing curvature of the roof.

This project was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2004, where it was awarded the Bovis Lend Lease and Architects' Journal Awards for Architecture. The final renderings below are by Jason Ahmed of Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners.
